Meet the Breeder - Humeston Flock

The Gilmour family now have 3 generations farming at Humeston, Ian, John and John Jnr. They farm 360 acres which is mainly grass, barley and maize which is grown for own use on the farm.

Dairy farming is the main part of the business but the Gilmours keep a flock of Border Leicesters and run flocks of Suffolks and Texel sheep too.

The Humeston Flock is one of the oldest flocks in the book, dating back to 1945. Over the years, rams from the Humeston Flock have had a great influence on the Border Leicesters of today- Humeston Four Square who was Champion at Lanark and Humeston MBE, also Champion at Lanark and sold to Glenside and Clola . The latest influencer is Humeston Hawkeye who was sold to the Alticane Flock.

The Flock was the Champion Flock in the Centenary Year.

Humeston have two rams lambs going to Lanark this year, both sired by Fordafourie Bond, courtesy of Hugh Guthrie. Fordafourie Bond was the number one in the Fordafourie pen last year.
